Seven days of silence, listening, singing, and composing

Artists, programmers, accountants, and musicians gather for seven days of silence, listening, writing music, singing each other's inspirations in private performances, and preparing and sharing meals. 

We believe that everyone has the capacity to hear new music and bring it into this world. Through working in groups, each of us gains support and experience listening to internal inspiration, and communicating that inspiration to others. Experienced musicians challenge their own internal critics, and gain tools to work through creative blocks. Beginning musicians gain support and basic tools to write and share their own music.

The Assistants Tony Geballe, Dev Ray, and Craig Shepard draw from experience participating in and organizing Guitar Craft and Guitar Circle Courses, and creating as part of groups in Wandelweiser,  and the theater group La Compagnia de' Colombari. Produced in cooperation with Angel Ludewig and Gabriela Suarez.

Contributions

To cover costs, we ask participants to contribute $850 for a single with a private bath or $695 for a double with a private bath.

Creating Music Together: One Road Out of Hell

There's a deep communion in music which we haven't found anywhere else. We've experienced moments in concerts where time stops and the musicians and audience are all connected and a window opens up where we cannot understand why we were ever anxious or worried about anything. These moments are brief, perhaps twenty seconds; a sense of the experience remains.

We believe that everyone has the capacity to create new music. Many people have been so trained to ignore their own leadings and to believe that they can't do anything to influence the world around them, that they no longer believe they can do anything. This is hell.

We have experienced beauty and awe in the moment a new piece of music is born. Being there when someone writes their first piece of music is a true joy.

We accept that our work may not have any impact in our lifetimes; we move forward anyway, taking the next indicated action. Each time we work with others to access their abilities, we are reminded that music creates a new future, if not for us then for those who come after us. This is one road out of hell.

We hope you join us for a week of silence, music, and working together. We will introduce basic exercises to listen to imagination, to communicate that to others, and to bring it into this world as your very own music.

Minding our Speech

On Creating Music Together retreats, we work as much as possible in the silence. Preparing food, washing the dishes, or cleaning the house, we work with as little talking as possible. During the 24 hours of silence on the Retreats in Place, we try to practice this at home with our families. Some of us have found the practice useful to apply in other situations.

Networks: Johnson, Joseph, Geballe

In 2015, Dan Joseph curated a program on music for Contemplation featuring Stuart Dempster. A highpoint of that program was a new work, Tromba Annunciation, for twelve trombones. I was particularly inspired by how Stuart works with groups. The trombonists will remember how Stuart initiated, followed, and shaped the music as it manifested. How Stuart worked without sheet music in a circular music were particularly energizing. I believe there is significant work still to be done in this direction. I had kept this in the back of my mind for a number of years. Something clicked when I saw a graphic from Tom Johnson.

Interview with CMT Assistant Craig Shepard

Composer Craig Shepard directs Music for Contemplation in New York. He trained as an orchestral trombonist with Frank Crisafulli, and studied Renaissance sacred music with Ulrich Eichenberger in Switzerland. A member of Wandelweiser, he studied with Michael Pisaro, took a Deep Listening Course with Pauline Oliveros, and has worked with Antoine Beuger, Jürg Frey, and Christian Wolff.

Tony Geballe is a guitarist, composer, and producer who’s worked with Karin Coonrod, the Trey Gunn Band, and Braindance. He worked extensively with Robert Fripp in Guitar Craft, and is currently working on the second album with Zero Times Everything. A brief interview about his work with Creating Music Together.
